Our Life

Sin Not Skin

“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:45

To say I am disgusted by the violence that’s going on across our country would be an understatement! Like many of you, I have watched the video of the male African American that died at the hands of the male Caucasian police officer. I know very many have concluded by calling this “racism”; I personally strongly disagree; this is a sinful man who behaved out of a sinful heart in the way he handled that man but in this case he happens to be “white”. The color of one’s skin does not and did not commit this crime but a sinful heart did.

A bad person is always a bad person; sin is sin despite the color of our skin; it could be black, white, purple or whatever you want to call it. And as an African woman, I have personally experienced segregation from fellow Africans first hand but I would never stereotype a group of people for that because I believe that is an individual sin that happens on an individual basis.

This man died and I understand there is grief for many but I have a problem when that death is used to steal, destroy property and harm many innocent people across the nation. What does stealing/looting have to do with grieving??? Unless of course one does not truly understand grief! How does burning down buildings help in healing of a person that is grieving? Again, unless one does not understand the pain of grieving!

Not to disregard George Floyd’s death, If I were to ask, how many “white men/women” die every day at the hands of a black person; do those lives not matter? What about Black on Black deaths or White on White deaths? Why should black lives matter only when its at the hand of a white person? Does every other death not matter? All life is a gift from God and must be cherished regardless of skin color.

As a mother of two children; a black mother and a white father, I believe we are raising human beings and not black, white or brown. We are raising human beings that were created in the image of God. We are not raising skin color!!!; Something I Pray and hope they will grow to understand and live out.

We as human beings are more than our skin/the shell that houses our souls!

We are all human beings; created in the image of God!!!

  1. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 12:13

    1. It’s definitely been hard seeing many of my friends scared to talk about this issue of race that is deeply destroying our nation!
My heart aches for the innocent folks being affected by this; right now especially the many police officers who put their lives on the line daily to protect Citizens of this country despite continuously being disrespected. And ofcourse not to mention the attack of core foundation of this country (church), the disrespect of the American flag that many have died defending…..I could go on and on. I know as Christians, our only consolation right now is the fact that God is in control and He will use this crazy season for His good.
      God bless

  2. I think you bring a unique perspective to the events because of your African origin. As the mother of a daughter from such a marriage as yours who is now 45 years old, I recognize that while I didn’t raise her to judge by race, she is constantly so judged. It pains me deeply. Of course we are all God’s creation and it grieves me that even many Christians can’t seem to grasp that basic Gospel truth.
