We held our son;
Their family lineage
Their last name
My father’s grandson
.
My brothers
Hold our father’s lineage
Father’s last name
A daughter,
I held father’s last name
Only for a “moment”
.
I “smile”
While wondering,
Is it fair?
Is it okay?
To carry and hold a child;
my own blood
My son
That holds not my father’s
Last name?

A beautiful poem susan! Thanks for sharing it here!
Odd, isn’t it? And some cultures do the opposite – carry the maternal name through.
