Romans 12:19 “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
What is it to forgive, what does that look like?….often we ask ourselves and then we think to ourselves that perhaps we think those that have offended us do not deserve our forgiveness. This though ought to take us back to the Lord’s pray in Mathew 6:9-13 ” Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
And then we can look at verses 14 and 15 which is a statement to emphasize the Lord’s prayer but as well as a command to us…..wow!!!
So, does forgiving imply that what has been done to us is right, or should the ones that harmed us gain our trust? No. Forgiving is simply choosing to give God the responsibility of holding those who have wronged us accountable for their actions. We stop seeking revenge and trust in God’s sovereignty to take care of that(Vengeance).
On the other hand, we can choose to be bitter(something i have often opted for). Wanting to revenge. Does this help us? Absolutely NO!!!!!. Instead it causes pain in us and the people who love us dearly.
Forgiveness frees us, gives us a good place in our hearts to allow God’s word in, helps us to feel alive again.
I know, you may be out there thinking ohhh well, how can anybody possibly understand what and who i would have to forgive?
God knows and understand our deep pain and yes there are so many people out there who have similar pain and Yes i have gone through most of that pain; Childhood sexual abuse, emotional abuse, Verbal abuse and more. And it has taken me alot of understanding of what scripture says about abuse and forgiveness, alot of love from my hubby and friends, speaking out my pain that was once concealed, counseling and of course continuous trust in the Lord even when am taken a few steps back into that pain .
“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND DO NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING.” Proverbs 3:5
